Old Japan Fukusuke Statue - Merchant God of Prosperity
Old Japan Fukusuke Statue - Merchant God of Prosperity
Description Vintage ceramic image of Fukusuke, Japan's god of merchant prosperity. Fukusuke is one of the lesser known Japanese luck gods, though in the past he was sometimes associated with the famous Shichifukujin seven gods of luck (please read below to learn more). Like Maneki Neko beckoning luck cat statues Fukusuke figures are often spotted at the entrance to Japanese places of business. The god is normally depicted in formal kimono either kneeling or bowing to show his respect and appreciation of business patrons. The old Fukusuke figure offered here is in poor to fair condition with no cracks though it does have some small chips, stains and scratches. There is a large chip at the lower right side which is visible and noted in the detail listing photos. The statue wears a darkened patina suggestive of age and past display. This statue dates from the early to mid Japanese Showa period (1926-1989) and was acquired in the historic city of Shizuoka, Japan near the foot of Mt. Fuji. Size: Height: 2.7 inches (7.0 centimeters) Weight: 3.1 ounces (89 grams) Note about buying Japanese Shinto antiques Many Shinto items such as ofuda, omamori, hamaya and shimenawa are thought to have limited powers which diminish over time. Japanese people therefore commonly dispose of such items each year in special burning ceremonies called dondoyaki, which are presided over by Shinto priests and performed on the grounds of the shrine. However, many Shinto items are not burned and may find ...

Journal TV - Almanac Newsreels - German and Japan surrender, British quell Greek riots, merchant shipping WWII
The surrender of Japan brought hostilities in World War II to a close. By the end of July 1945, the Imperial Japanese Navy was incapable of conducting operations and an Allied invasion of Japan was imminent. While publicly stating their intent to fight on to the bitter end, Japan's leaders at the Supreme Council for the Direction of the War (the "Big Six") were privately making entreaties to the neutral Soviet Union, to mediate peace on terms favorable to the Japanese. The Soviets, meanwhile, were preparing to attack the Japanese, in fulfillment of their promises to the Americans and the British made at the Tehran and Yalta Conferences. A collection of over 200 historical newsreels. Each newsreel runs approximately 3 minutes and covers the most important events of the first half of the 20th century.

---------------- Subscribe to World War II Videos----------------------- Victory at Sea Full Fathom Five Release Date: March 29, 1953 ... (Episode #21) Episode # 21. In this episode of Victory at Sea, we see how the US Navy's submarines contributed to the Japanese empire's downfall, sinking thousands of tons of ships, and strangling the Japanese. We see footage of ship upon ship from the House of the Rising Sun destroyed. But a price is paid for those whom the US Navy classifies as "did not return".Allied submarines were a key contributor to the Empire of Japan's defeat during the Pacific War. During the war submarines were responsible for fifty-five percent of Japan's merchant marine losses. The war against shipping was the single most decisive factor in the collapse of the Japanese economy and one of the least publicized feats in history. Allied submarines also conducted reconnaissance patrols, landed special forces and guerrilla troops and performed search and rescue tasks. The majority of the submarines involved were from the United States Navy with the British Royal Navy and the Royal Netherlands Navy contributing smaller numbers of boats. A Tour of Submarine USS Becuna
A Tour of Submarine USS Becuna
Info from the Independence Seaport Museum's official website: "Launched in 1944, the Becuna (SS-319) completed five wartime patrols in the Pacific Ocean. Becuna is similar to many submarines built in Philadelphia for the US Navy. Becuna is a BALAO-class submarine built in New London, CT. During World War II, "Becky" prowled the Pacific Ocean for Japanese ships, and is credited with sinking 3.5 Japanese merchant ships. Click here to read more about Becuna's wartime patrols. Converted in 1951 to a Guppy 1A type with sophisticated radar and torpedo equipment including nuclear warheads, she is the only Guppy 1-A submarine on display. Becuna's Cold War missions often found her in the Atlantic, trailing Soviet submarines with eavesdropping equipment aboard. She served in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic during the Korean and Vietnam Wars and ended her long and distinguished career as a training submarine in Connecticut."
